We started off the day with a wonderful breakfast of made-to-order eggs, pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage, and a self-serve yogurt/cereal bar. At 9:00 A.M., after breakfast, we were picked up by our exuberant guides who brought us to a native mountain potter, named Dona Ramona.
After traveling for an hour up to the remote desert community of San Vicente, we met Dona Ramona and her kind family! Dona Ramona helped us make pottery out of natural clay that she picked from the local riverbed. While we were working, she told us stories about her life and taught us about her culture. Afterwards, her family taught us how to make fresh tortillas and gave us a delightful lunch. Before we left, we were able to look at Dona Ramona's pottery studio and were given the chance to purchase her work.
Once we finished our morning activity, we had free time to get ice cream at the local ice cream parlor. We, then, were able to explore the town, which allowed us a chance to practice our conversational spanish!
At 4:30 P.M., we continued our volunteer work helping the Palapas students paint papier mache hummingbird figures for an art project. The students worked on their english while we worked on our spanish! We were so excited to work more with the kids and develop more relationships with them while showing off our artistic skills.
After an exhausting evening, we took off to Cafe Brown, where we met the amazing Chef Iker. There he taught us how to cook authentic mexican food and as we prepared our dinner Chef Iker prepared a surprise mariache band visit. Before dinner we danced and sang for at least a half an hour with the mariache band before we enjoyed our delicious dinner of manchata, a poblano pepper dish, rice and beans.
